Radio Trainer, ABC/Storyteller

Place of birth: Coleraine, Northern Ireland

Year of birth:

Lived in Launceston: 14 years growing up, went away and I’ve been back now 17 years

I was nearly 7 when we moved to Launceston from Northern Ireland. We came here so my dad, Tom, could take up a job in the library. We knew nobody and in those early days drove around in a Datsun 1600 exploring Tasmania. The bush was so different to the landscape in Ireland. One day my dad said “I’ve started to like gum trees”.  It was profound. It was acceptance of where we now lived.

To have this bush, this reserve, these trees, so close to my house in Launceston is a gift. Walking in the morning; waking up to a new day; seeing wallabies; hearing birds – how lucky am I?
